Worlds Largest House of Cards

This happened a few years ago, but it was news to me, so hopefully you take something new from it too.

An architect by the name of Bryan Berg currently holds the Guinness World Record for biggest house ever built out of cards. Using no tape or glue, Bryan spent 44 days making a 218,792 card house from 4,051 decks of playing cards.

The structure weighs about 600 pounds, and measures about 32×10 feet. It is a replica of the Venetian Macau, and was on display in its namesake luxury hotel and casino.

Recently we had a bunch of platform/stage/parlor sized magic come in to the magic shop. I was looking at in and noticed now days it’s easier than ever to put together a solid 30 minute show! Let’s say you need a new 30 minute show for groups that you performed for last summer. Here’s a sample show you could pick up today and start practicing right away and have ready for summer shows:

Opening

Magic to music (6 mins): Appearing candle (using a vanishing candle) with a handkerchief. Put the candle aside and do the Slydini Silks and finish with producing a ball with the handkerchief and go into multiplying balls. Next go back the the candle and do candle through arm and finally vanish the candle.

Comedy

If you’re browsing this site, there’s no doubt you recognize the name Paul Harris. One of the most prolific and creative magic inventors in the last century. But who’s the brains of the business behind the scenes of Paul’s endeavors? That would be his sister, Janet. From helping as an assistant during birthday parties to booking shows and beyond, she truly is an Astonishment Goddess.

Back in June of last year, we featured a post of David Thurston, a relative of the Great Howard Thurston (see here: http://marketmagicshop.com/magic_shop_blog/?p=692). Lo and behold, there’s more of them out there, namely Brooke of Santa Cruz, CA. Apparently never bitten by the show biz bug, she describes herself as a practitioner/instructor of nia (Non-Impact Aerobics, or Neuromuscular Integrative Action, depending on how many syllables you wish to expend). She is pictured below with her famous relative consulting the book of forbidden knowledge behind her left shoulder, and holding our last copy of The Complete Life of Howard Thurston by Robert E. Olson, which, thanks to her, is now out of stock.

That’s right, one of the most notable of the Rain City Superhero Movement, Phoenix Jones, made a visit to Market Magic in civilian garb last Sunday. Normally, I’d have taken a picture, but that defeats the whole idea of a secret identity, doesn’t it? You know, it could have been some mild mannered, muscle bound dude claiming to be Phoenix Jones…anyway, here’s a shot of PJ in his full costumed glory. Coming just a week after the Emerald City Comicon, the city has had it’s fair share of costumed fans filling the streets. And the convention center.
